Summer Reading Buddies Program Kickoff
Summer Reading Buddies is a program designed to develop leadership skills and volunteerism in Older Buddies as they support Little Buddies in emerging literacy skills and a love of reading. Registration as a Little or Older Buddy is required! Program dates: Wednesdays, June 24 - August 5 #### Session schedule: - 11:00-11:15am Older Buddies mini-training session - 11:15-11:30am Little Buddies arrive; group game/activity - 11:30-12:00pm One-on-one reading ### Who can be a Little Buddy? - Pre-K age through 5th grade. - No minimum reading/writing skills required. - Must be able to sit with Older Buddy for 30 minutes of reading (can take movement breaks if needed). - Must be able to attend at least six of the 8 meetings at the library OR arrange to meet your buddy at a different mutually convenient time/place (could even be on Zoom). ### Requirements for volunteering as an Older Buddy - Older Buddies must be in middle school or high school (grades 6-12). - You do not have to be a “serious” reader, just someone who enjoys reading or wants to rediscover the joy of reading. - Attend at least six of the 8 meetings at the library OR arrange to meet your buddy at a different mutually convenient time/place (could even be on Zoom). - Be fully engaged, kind, and patient with your Little Buddy. They will be looking up to you and following your lead! - Fill out a pre- and post-survey about your experience. - No phone or other personal device use during reading sessions. ### What do Older Buddies do? Mentor a younger reader in pre-K through 5th grade! This is an opportunity to build a connection with a younger reader (Little Buddy) over the summer to support their emerging literacy and a life-long love of reading. Each session will begin with 15 minutes of training for Older Buddies, 15 minutes of a group game, and 30 minutes of one-on-one reading. Participation counts towards community service hours.

Do you love the beautiful natural areas and gardens at WRI? Are you interested in learning about the native plants that grow here, and ways to protect them and the ecosystem they are a part of? Then come join our newly rebranded Nature Menders Volunteer Group! (Previously known as Weed Warriors) You will learn all about the common invasive plant species that threaten the local native plant and animal communities here in Leavenworth, all while helping to increase biodiversity at WRI. Tools and gloves will be provided but bring your own if you have something special you prefer using. Dress is layers appropriate for the weather, bring your reusable water bottle, and get ready to get your hands dirty! Nature Menders will meet weekly during Spring and early Summer on Tuesdays from 8:30am-10:30am. We will meet at the far end of the parking lot by the Raven and Nest sculpture, at the top of the Native Plant Garden. Stay for as little or as long as you like. Your help is greatly appreciated!
